Stellaluna is the main titular protagonist of the Living Books PC game.

Role[]

At the beginning of the game, she is born to an unnamed female bat, who names her. Stellaluna learns to speak, and the two bats go out together, but an owl chases them. During the chase, Stellaluna's mother drops her, and, being too young to fly, Stellaluna falls into a tree, where she becomes scared and lonely.

The next morning, she wakes up next to a birds' nest, in which lives a mother bird with her three sons Pip, Flitter, and Flap. The four birds adopt Stellaluna as their surrogate daughter/sister, she has to eat bugs despite disliking them due to them being the only food available, and she has to sleep in the nest at night due to Mama Bird seeing sleeping hanging from one's feet during the day as bad behaviour.

When Mama Bird's children grow to the point where they can barely fit in the nest anymore, she decides to teach them how to fly so that they won't have to spend all their time in the nest. The bird brothers learn to land perfectly on the first try, but Stellaluna does not, and is so embarrassed that she flies away.

At night, a bat meets her and introduces her to his bat friends, and she reveals she was raised by birds, while they teach her how bats work. Her mother also reunites with her and recognises her as her "baby" from her smell. The bats fly off and eat some mangoes, and in the morning, they meet Pip, Flitter, and Flap. That night, Stellaluna tries unsuccessfully to teach the bird brothers how to fly at night, and they sing a song about their friendship.

Trivia[]

  • She is voiced by Vanessa Barrow.
  • By the end of the book, she can fly, but is still described as "young" and a "child". This means that Stellaluna is probably an adolescent.
